All the news feeds are buzzing about the recent cannabis exchange that allegedly went down at the White House between Obama and Sir Richard Branson this past week. Before the crazy anti-Obama haters get stirred up let me point out that the statement was meant in jest as a way to bring light to Bronson’s recent increase in involvement with Global Commission on Drug Policy.
Sir Richard Branson went to the White House this week to attend a state dinner. It’s reported that when he got a chance to speak to President Obama he asked him if he could have a spliff (joint).
If you don’t know what the Global Commission on Drug Policy is then let me fill you in about the groups international work toward legalization and the ultimate end to the failed “War on Drugs”. The group is comprised of leaders from across the world like the former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, former Chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Paul Volcker, and the former heads of state of several countries that are currently carving a path for progressive compassionate drug policy integration.
Marijuana advocates from across the world are increasingly using technology, open debate and social media to rally up support and inform the public about what our current state of affairs are. We can’t necessarily trust the media and we have witnessed the governments willingness to ignore the pubic push back as we demand answers for why our laws are currently counter-productive and damaging to certain colors and class of people.
The Youtube channel Versus: The War on Drugs held a public debate over the issues involving marijuana on March 14, 2012 that has since been viewed over 350,000 times. Branson who is lord and master of the Virgin Group is a media conglomerate and an international philanthropists who used his company’s website and his personal blog to invite the entire internet to join in a public discussion via Google + during the live Youtube broadcast.
With public support coming from the four corners of the world and with allies that actually have power, resources and knowledge at their disposal I can’t help but to get excited by this. I’m a geek, for sure, and any mention of politics and technology and weed together in the same sentence is my version of strapping on my sparkly Chucks and dancing on the Moon!
I know I’m not the only one out here so follow me on Google + to stay up to date as I keep an eye on all things cannabis and politics. I know it’s not like the underground railroad or anything but we can still pretend, right?
The Left party’s proposal is to allow Germans to open exclusive cannabis clubs, where members will be able to grow marijuana plants. They also recommend that consumers be allowed to own 30 grams of the drug for personal consumption – double the current limit.
The proposal was put together by Frank Tempel, former director of an anti-drug group that worked with police in the eastern German state of Thuringia.
Germany's socialist Left party is calling an expert hearing on "legalizing cannabis through the introduction of cannabis clubs" in the German Parliament on Wednesday, January 25, but the idea has reportedly been met with "widespread rejection" from mainstream politicians. The Left party is proposing that Germans be allowed to open cannabis clubs where members can grow marijuana, reports PanArmenian.net. They also recommend that consumers be allowed to possess up to 30 grams of pot for personal use, double the current limit in Germany. The proposal was written by Frank Tempel, former director of an anti-drug group that worked with police in the eastern German state of Thuringia, reports The Local. Tempel, who is now the Left party's advisor on drug policy, said there needs to be a sea change in Germany's attitude to marijuana.

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW) will give a new electric-powered city car a lounge feel with bench seats, naturally tanned “mocha brown” leather and hemp fibers in the floor covering to hold off Volkswagen AG (VOW)’s Audi.
BMW for the first time showed concept versions of the i3 electric city car and the i8 hybrid supercar, which Chief Executive Officer Norbert Reithofer said will cost more than 100,000 euros ($143,000), in Frankfurt today. The models, developed from scratch, will anchor BMW’s new “i” sub-brand.
“The majority of current electric vehicles are so-called conversions of traditional vehicles but conversions are always compromises,” development chief Klaus Draeger said. “We wanted to bring e-mobility to the streets without compromise.”
BMW is betting that the 530 million euros investment to set up production of the vehicles will pay off in the race with Audi, which overtook Daimler AG (DAI)’s Mercedes-Benz this year and has vowed to topple the Munich-based carmaker as the luxury-car leader by 2015. Initial volumes for the models could be in the “tens of thousands,” with the potential to grow rapidly depending on market and regulatory developments, sales chief Ian Robertson told Bloomberg TV.
